In January 2007, we updated our classes for new BERNINA machine owners. It has been an overwhelming success in its short life and our students are encouraging us to continue to bring additional FREE Mastery classes into this program.
Our first responsibility was to match YOU up with the right machine. Our second responsibility is to make sure YOU understand and love your machine and introduce YOU to some areas of sewing which you are not familiar. Our third responsibility is for YOU to feel good about the BERNINA brand. We will show you products which we feel are the best on the market and techniques which will make your sewing experience with us professional.
These classes are FREE with the purchase of your BERNINA machine from Bear’s Paw Fabrics, or you may pay $50.00 per class if you purchased your Bernina machine elsewhere.
MASTERY 1 – (ALL MODELS) – MACHINE BASICS
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
No Kit Fee.
Threading, bobbin winding, needle positions, free hand system (if applicable), motor speeds, needle up/down, thread cutters, continuous reverse and proper maintenance. Seaming, zigzag, satin stitch, stitching corners, topstitch/edgestitch, basting, temporary altered stitch memory.
MASTERY 2 – (ALL MODELS) – PRACTICAL STITCHING
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
No Kit Fee.
A potpourri of basic stitches and hems – zigzag, stretch and overlock stitches. Hems - blind, handpicked and jeans. Shell edging and rolled and whipped edge.
MASTERY 3 – (ALL MODELS) – ON THE EDGE
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
No Kit Fee.
Playing with elastics – edging, waistbands and cuffs. Buttonhole types, feet, sizing and uses for buttonholes. Make buttonhole samples and be introduced to the button sew-on foot. Yes, there really is one!
MASTERY 4 – (ALL MODELS) – DECORATIVE TECHNIQUES
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
Kit Fee: $15.00 includes fabrics, Perle cotton, double needle, wing needle, cording, couching threads, thread and organdy.
A touch of heirloom working with gathering using the one and two cord method and then trying it with the gathering foot. Pintucks (no, they are not just for babies and children!), double needle and wing needle practice samples. Try your hand at piping and review its many uses. See how easy it is to couch threads and why it is so popular now.
MASTERY 5 – BERNINA STITCH REGULATOR (AURORA AND ARTISTA BSR MODELS ONLY)

Kit Fee: $15.00 includes quilt sandwiches, quilting thread and samples of Golden Threads and/or Borders on a Roll.
Get comfortable with your new, fabulous BSR. Why do you have three soles for this foot and what is the proper installation of the foot. Using your needle and thread as a "pencil" begin doodling! Experiment with mode 1 and 2 to find your favorite. What is Golden Threads and Borders on a Roll?
MASTERY 6 – (EMBROIDERY MODEL MACHINES ONLY) – EMBROIDERY 1

Kit Fee: $30.00 includes supplies for all three embroidery mastery classes. Also in your kit is a Floriani stabilizer pack, the Floriani stabilizer workbook and CD (Floriani stabilizer pack, workbook and CD are a $40.00 value alone!).
Now it’s time to get to the fun stuff! Learn proper attachment of the embroidery module, why we use the gold latch bobbincase and the importance of bobbin thread. Review of the various threads for embroidery and your introduction to the world of stabilizers. What needles to use. What’s the scoop on the sprays. We will introduce you to your new best friend – the Masterhooper (perfect gift)! What do you do with the grids that come with the hoops and how do I mark the placement lines for designs? How many hoops are made for my machine and why? Look at the three folders on the machine and the edit screen for moving designs. Then we will stitch a one color design.
MASTERY 7 - (EMBROIDERY MODEL MACHINES ONLY) – EMBROIDERY 2

You will stitch a design of several colors showing how to change thread, the purpose of spool caps, using the free hand system and take a look at the multiple spool holder. We will use the edit screen again, load a design, add letters and stitch it out.
MASTERY 8 – (EMBROIDERY MODEL MACHINES ONLY) - EMBROIDERY 3
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
We will take a look at embroideries stitched out since the last class, learn more about the edit screen, rotating a design, mirror image, scale up and down, letter arch, sizing and using the USB stick. There will be a question and answer session and hopefully time will permit us to embroider a towel.
MASTERY 9 – (ARTISTA ONLY) – STITCH MANIPULATIONS AND FEATURES

Your Artista is full of creative possibilities. We will practice with our wonderful “fancy” functions, such as: combi-mode, memory/sub-divide, direction stitching, personal program, tensions, screen contrast, messages and signals, creative consultant and tutorial. At the end of this class, you will really appreciate why you chose BERNINA!
MASTERY 10 – (ACTIVAS & AURORAS) – MEMORY FUNCTIONS
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
No Kit Fee.
Become comfortable with accessing, programming, editing and saving memory. What is the memory capacity of my machine? We will combine stitches, learn all about stitch recipes and work with alphabets.
MASTERY 11 – (ALL MODELS) – QUILTING
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
Kit Fee: $15.00 includes quilt needles, Superior King Tut, Sulky Blendables and/or YLI quilting thread.
Practice stippling, hand look quilt stitch, outline and in the ditch stitching. Review the various decorative stitches in your machine to use for crazy quilting and pick up some tips for quilting your next projects.
MASTERY 12 – (ALL MODELS) – APPLIQUÉ
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
Kit Fee: $15.00 – includes towel, stabilizer, cut appliqué pieces with fusible added, thread to match plus a sample version of the appliqué for practice.
Learn three appliqué machine techniques – blindhem, blanket and satin. Take advantage of your Free Hand System and get to know the advantages of the variable width function on your machine. Work on an appliqué towel with a seasonal theme.
MASTERY 13 – (ALL MODELS) – ZIPPERS

Kit Fee: $15.00 includes regular zipper, invisible zipper, denim and thread
You will work with a centered zipper application. Lap and invisible zipper techniques will be discussed. You will make a small zipped pouch just to prove to yourself you CAN do it!
MASTERY 14 – (ALL MODELS) – ADVANCED DECORATIVE TECHNIQUES
FREE* or $75.00 Class Fee
Kit Fee: $15.00
If you have completed Mastery classes 1 through 4 you are ready for this class. You have practiced gathering, pleating, pin tucks and wing needle application. Now learn how much more there is to these techniques and how you can create exquisite heirloom work, stunning garments, wonderful quilts, and clever home dec items. This is a fun and very useful class for any type of sewer.
We hope you will enjoy these classes as much as we enjoy sharing them with you. We will make them fun and educational. Remember, these FREE classes can be taken as often as needed. We have been asked numerous times if you can use designs purchased from Bernina and Oklahoma Embroidery on items to be sold. We have put together some guidelines for you to follow regarding this issue:
If you have an embroidery card that is “Licensed” it will be marked as such on the card. Your use is limited to the following:
1. Designs, color and size may be changed and are for your personal use only.
2. Designs, color and size may be changed and can be used as gifts only for family and friends.
3. Designs, regardless of color or size change, cannot be used for any commercial use.
If you have an embroidery card that is “not licensed”, you may:
1. Use the designs for your personal use, as gifts, or for commercial purposes.
This copyright summary was geared towards embroidery designs. However, there are laws pertaining to books and patterns. If we are conducting a class or have a sample in one of our Stores, you must purchase the book or pattern in order to make the project, we cannot copy the pattern for you. You should also not share patterns or books with your friends. Think about it, if these were YOUR patterns or YOUR books, would YOU want someone to give YOUR books/patterns to someone else without paying for YOUR TIME AND MONEY? This is their livelihood and we need to respect this. If you want to continue to receive wonderful projects from the designers, we need to play by the rules.
