STUPENDOUS STITCHES - Embellishing Fabric

So you have all of these beautiful stitches on your machine.  Do you know that you can alter them using stitch width, stitch length, elongation, and other features your machine may have.  Do you know where your pivoting stitches are?  Everyone has them, let's learn how to make them!  Let's use those beautiful stitches to embellish fabric!

We will have great fun taking a beautiful piece of fabric and enhance and embellish it by adding decorative stitches, couching cords and ribbons, adding trims and/or buttons.   While doing this you will learn the features of your machine and how to use them

Once you have this embellished fabric, what will you make with it?  We'll talk about what you can do with your new fabric during class.

This class is not limited to Bernina machines only.  All machines are welcome.

Supply List

Book: Stupendous Stitches by Carol Ann Waugh

Fabric:

It is recommended to use a batik that does not have a strong pattern with either a muted or bright color palette - definitely not a patterned fabric. In addition bring extra fabric that you can practice stitching on before stitching on your final fabric.

  • About one yard of fabric or more depending on what you want to make with it. Part of this fabric will be used to audition the stitches before stitching on your final piece. You will understand this more in the class.
  • The same amount of fusible interfacing or stabilizer for the amount of the above fabric.

If you can, before fuse the interfacing/stabilizer to the fabric.

Sewing Thread:

Variety of colors that blend or contrast with fabric. Threads can be cotton, polyester, rayon, embroidery or anything that you want to work with in different weight but nothing less than a 30 or higher than a 60 weight.

Cords for Couching:

A variety of colors that blend or contrast with fabric such as:

  • Rattail
  • Pearl Crown Rayon – this is a little thinner but we will twine 2/3 strands together (we have this at the store)
  • LaEspiga – also a little thin can twine 2 strands together
  • Anything you might like to use

 Needles:

A variety of needles to match up with the type of thread using such as:

  • Microtex – 80 & 90
  • Topstitch – 80 & 90
  • Universal – 80 & 90
  • Ballpoint – 80 & 90
